Creating Lasting Benefits for Local People
Chanctonbury Community Land Trust was established to help shape a thriving, sustainable future for Thakeham and the surrounding parishes.
As a community-owned organisation, our purpose is simple: to create social, economic and environmental benefits that remain in local hands and serve local people for generations to come.
What We Aim to Achieve
🏡 Affordable Homes for Local People
We are committed to helping meet local housing needs by developing and managing affordable homes, including rental and shared ownership opportunities, enabling local people to remain part of the communities they love.
🌱 Sustainable Communities
We support projects that enhance environmental sustainability, reduce carbon emissions and strengthen community resilience, including renewable energy initiatives and environmental improvements.
🏢 Supporting Local Enterprise
Thriving local businesses create thriving communities. We aim to provide flexible workspaces, facilities and opportunities that help local entrepreneurs, start-ups and small businesses succeed.
🏪 Protecting Essential Community Services
We recognise the importance of community facilities that bring people together and support daily life. We will work to establish, protect and enhance assets such as community shops, post offices and other valued local services.
🤝 Strengthening Community Life
We will support projects, facilities and activities that improve wellbeing, reduce isolation, build skills and create opportunities for people of all ages to participate in community life.
🌳 Enhancing Our Natural Environment
We are committed to protecting and enhancing the landscapes, woodlands, green spaces and wildlife habitats that make our part of West Sussex such a special place to live.
Investing in the Future
Unlike commercial organisations, Chanctonbury Community Land Trust exists solely for community benefit.
Any surplus generated through our activities is reinvested into new projects, community assets and initiatives that further our aims. No profits are distributed to Members.
This means every pound generated by the Trust works to create lasting value for local people and future generations.
Community Assets Protected Forever
One of the defining features of a Community Land Trust is that its assets are protected for community benefit.
Land, buildings and resources owned by the Trust cannot be sold for private gain. They must continue to be used to support the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of our communities.
This ensures that the benefits created today remain available for future generations and that community assets stay rooted in the communities they were created to serve.
Our Vision
To create a stronger, greener and more resilient future where local people have the power to shape the places they live, work and belong.
Together, we can build a lasting legacy for our communities.
Restriction on Use of Assets
All of CCLT’s assets are subject to a restriction on their use. The society must not use or deal with its assets except in certain circumstances for example:
- Where the use or dealing is, directly or indirectly, for a purpose that is for the benefit of the community;
- To pay a Shareholding Member of the society the value of their withdrawable share capital or interest on such capital;
- To transfer its assets for example to one or more of the following:
- A prescribed community benefit society;
- A community interest company;
- A registered social landlord which has a restriction on the use of its assets;
- A charity (including a community benefit society that is a charity).
